Los Jairas / Los Jairas

Los Jairas were formed in 1965 by Swiss jazz player Gilbert Favre. The original members of Los Jairas included Edgar Joffré as singer and percussionist, Julio Godoy as guitarist, Ernesto Cavour as charango player (small ten-stringed guitar) and Gilbert Favre playing the quena (notched-end vertical flute). They acquired great reputation, which fast spread beyond the borders of Bolivia, winning several prizes and touring with popular figures such as Violeta Parra during her European and South American tour. Their musical style is música folklórica, an urban style that incorporated features of the criollo tradition (Spanish heritage) which transformed elements of indigenous Quechua or Aymara folk music. They are considered one of the best South American groups of its kind. This is their first album, published in 1967 by the Bolivian label Lyra.
